Pre-finishing

As a custom option on all of our products, Stilewood offers complete pre-finishing services. One of the purposes of pre-finishing is to protect wood from the elements of weather as wood shrinks and expands as the moisture content changes. Pre-finishing protects the wood from reabsorbing water and protects the wood from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays on its surface.

Pre-finishing not only protects wood, it also provides an element of beauty to your finished product. Our comprehensive pre-finishing process ensures that the natural beauty and grain of the wood is highlighted and enhanced in every piece we do, bringing out the art of the wood. We also have the ability to match your pre-finishing choice with other elements in your home such as your furniture and cabinets. With a number of standard colors available, we also welcome any custom colour requests that you may have.

With our period reproduction furniture background and as part of our heritage, Stilewood takes the pre-finishing process to heart. Headed by Brent Pichet, son of world renowned pre-finisher Art Pichet, our staff of pre-finishing experts are regarded as the best the industry has to offer. Selecting only the best pre-finishers, they are trained to provide a historical pre-finish at a level that is suitable for some of the finest churches, villas and movie sets worldwide. Our expert pre-finishers also help you select a colour choice and provide you with sample submissions of your final product.

At Stilewood, we use the finest stains and finishes for all of our pre-finishing work which includes staining, priming and painting options. Our pre-finishing process is very detailed, with each product undergoing a comprehensive process that ensures a uniform colour, texture, sheen and finish and that provides the ultimate in protection and durability for your doors. The result is a high quality, smooth, furniture-grade finish.

Due to the extensive nature of the pre-finishing process, our in-house pre-finishing department can only take on select jobs. Pre-finishing is not an automated process, but one that incorporates old-world traditions and processes and one that does not allow technology to surpass old-world customs. As we are dedicated to providing “furniture for your walls,” we treat every one of our products like a piece of high-end furniture, ensuring a pre-finishing quality that is unmatched.

Distressing

As a custom option on all of our products, Stilewood offers complete distressing services through our in-house team of experienced distressing professionals.

Wood distressing or “antiquing” involves a technique of either a mechanical and/or chemical nature that is used to texture wood in order to provide an “aged” look or to replicate a certain age or period of time. By distressing, we are able to age the wood to whatever look you desire, and as a result, give the wood an antique feel. Distressing focuses on obvious worn areas, such as the corners or the bottom - places that most likely receive the most wear, damage and usage.

At Stilewood, we consider the process of distressing an art. Since the distressing and texturing process at Stilewood is done by hand, no two pieces can ever be identical or replicated. Therefore, by its very nature, distressing guarantees that every product is unique.

Stilewood helps you take the guess work out of distressing. We recognize the difficulty that you may have in making this complicated choice as there is no reversal or going back once the distressing process has been done. To assure you in your choice of distressing, the members of the Stilewood distressing department will assist you with every step of the process.

The staff at Stilewood are experts in the distressing of wood and have many years of experience creating unique and beautiful antiqued pieces. Our team will work closely with you to make sure that you understand the distressing process and that it is customized to your own preferences. The distressing process is easiest and most accurately understood once you see a sample of the work. Stilewood has these sample submissions available for you to view before your make your distressing choices.

Stilewood uses many techniques to achieve the effects of distressing including softening sharp corners, pillowing panels and corners, scarring, marring, scratching, denting, dinging, worm holing, rough texturing, huing and scalloping.
